Live Better - Make Joy a Priority

By Sandy Schroeder

In today's world, the little things that make us happy can easily get lost. There is always one more thing to do, but it may be time to pause for little pleasures. You will still need to do everything else, but adding some joy may relieve a lot of stress. WellAndGood.com offers some tips on making daily life better.

Start out by practicing survival - Let yourself indulge in the little things that make the day special. Buy your favorite foods and then set aside time to have hearty breakfasts, satisfying lunches and special dinners. Take time out for a cup of tea in the afternoon, or a cup of hot chocolate in the evening.

Reserve time to worry and to dream - When you confine most of your worries to a specific time you can dump them all right there. Make a list and think of all of the details. What's wrong? What could happen? What will go awry? Later, when a worry comes up, you could decide to think about it later in your worry session. At the same time set aside time to dream. If you have a favorite spot outside, sit there and put your feet up. Then let your imagination roam. Imagine the perfect trip, the perfect meal, the perfect spot and picture all of the details. They could be drawn from memories or projected from your visions. Later you may make one of those details happen, savoring a favorite food or local spot.

Make the outdoors an extra room - Add pillows, chairs, plants and mats and use your extra room as a retreat whenever you need to just get away for a few minutes. Add other spots outside to do stretches, shoot hoops or play volleyball. Finally, set up a barbecue and table for evening suppers.

Sleep peacefully - Make some time each week to sleep without interruptions when you are overloaded. The rest of the time stick to a daily schedule that lets you get 7-9 hours every night. Turn your bedroom into a retreat with a comfortable mattress and pillows, an air filter to screen out noise, and blackout drapes to block out light. Shut down electronics two hours before bedtime and skip spicy meals, smoking, or alcohol right before bedtime.

You may not feel you have time to indulge in special little details, but once you do you may wonder what you were waiting for. Attention to small details that you enjoy can take the edge off of the day and help you keep your balance day after day.
