What a Chiropractor Really Does

A lot of people will go to a chiropractor to get relief for back pain. In fact, about 7.7 million Americans will go to a chiropractor for this very reason this year alone. It offers a non-surgical way to get relief from a common problem. There are many reasons why people get back pain, and these include accidents of various types, injuries from sports activities, strained muscles, and more. While there are many causes, the main issue that a chiropractor will deal with is to give relief from the pain. Other goals are to restore function and range of motion.

The first thing that a chiropractor will usually do is to get an overall medical history. A physical exam can be expected, as well as an x-ray. This will enable the chiropractor to determine the problem and know whether or not the patient can be helped by chiropractic care. The chiropractor may also use a device that measures temperature around the spine. Inflammation and possibly other problems will be revealed by raised temperatures, and this will show the places that need attention. Subluxations, or places where there is a misalignment, can also be discovered this way.

Treatments will primarily involve spinal manipulation, often referred to as a chiropractic adjustment. The goal is to put vertebrae that are misaligned into their proper position. After an adjustment, the pain is often relieved almost instantly, although several treatments are often needed. An adjustment is primarily delivered to the misaligned spot by applying a sudden force to the troubled spot. If it is determined that a problem cannot be resolved by chiropractic methods, such as a fracture or an open wound, this type of potentially serious problem will be referred to a specialist.

Chiropractic treatment has been shown over many years to be very useful in helping alleviate lower back and neck pain problems. Other issues such as headaches, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis have also been helped by visits to a chiropractor's office.
