Improve Your Health When You Blow

By Tom Herrin

Most people don’t really feel as if they can improve their health by doing small things.  They usually believe that major things must happen in order for them to make a significant contribution.  It actually isn’t like that. Fine tuning health can be done with little physical effort. When it comes to tuning, however, playing a tune may actually do far more than many may realize.  Those who play a horn, which is powered by the wind people create, may be doing something for their health that many others think may be accomplished only by active exercise.

It May Strengthen Core Muscles

When people play a wind instrument and have to blow air through it, they must hold their bodies more upright in order to produce enough air.  This naturally encourages them to sit or stand up straight, thus improving their posture. They will work those core muscles without actually intending to do so.  It will also help support better breathing habits. Those are always helpful in carrying over into other activities they may do.

It May Build a Feeling of Success

Everyone needs to feel that they can be successful at some endeavor.  Whether it is participating in some athletic activity or achieving some long-term goal, people can gain confidence from accomplishing it.  Playing an instrument can provide that feeling. It can reward the practice they have put in with positive results as a finished product. Creating a musical sound that is pleasing to oneself and others can do a lot for self-esteem.  When people build self-esteem, they are able to be better at a variety of things they seek to do.

It May Help Relieve Stress

Being successful in doing something can create a sense of calm.  If you enjoy music, as surely anyone who attempts to play an instrument does, listening to your own creation can provide a peaceful feeling.  I enjoy playing a little myself, even though my skills are not all that great. When I get with others and play, it always tends to be relaxing.  It is easy go lose track of time and spend quite a bit of it involved in the music. Anytime this happens, it is not all bad. Getting our minds off of many of the demands we have daily can be a great way to kick back and clear our heads.  If you haven’t made any music lately, give it a try. It may add to the healthy lifestyle you are working to build.
