Give Up Exercise Due to a Sitting Job? No Need

By Tom Herrin

There are some good reasons that people sometimes give for failing to exercise.  One of them is that they are just too tired when they get in from work.  Another one is that they are too busy to put it into their schedule.  Both of these may be addressed by a good plan to exercise while sitting in a chair at work.  While it may be difficult to get in a fast-paced activity, people can still work their muscles and build a little strength and/or get their blood circulating.  The only thing they really need is a chair and the will to carry out a plan.

It May Be Used to Incorporate Isometrics

Some people feel that if they are not up and moving for their exercise, they are not making progress.  This is really not the case as any exercise is always better than no exercise.  Yoga is a recognizable practice that many find useful.  The namaste pose can be effectively executed while sitting.  It is done by sitting up with the feet flat on the floor.  The palms are brought together in front with pressure being applied so that the muscles tense up.  Holding this position for about 20 seconds at a time can provide good resistance.  It may be done as many times as people feel is beneficial.

It May Be Possible to Work the Abs

For many people, working the abs can be a challenge.  An easy workout can be done while sitting by inhaling slowly through the nose.  Tightening the abs while inhaling, squeezing, and holding for a few seconds can be considered  a rep.  Letting go and repeating this as many times as necessary can do a pretty good job of working the abs.  There is nothing magic about it.  It is plain and simple exercise.

It May Allow a Workout With No Rules

You may be surprised just what you can do while sitting once you begin to play with a few exercises.  The possibilities are wide open.  I have been able to work some of my core and ab muscles by sitting on the edge of a chair and sort of balancing myself.  After a knee injury once, I was told to do leg raises while sitting and holding my knee straight.  This can work while sitting in a desk chair as well.  Be creative with what you want to accomplish and see the results.
