Where Did the Fat Go?

By Tom Herrin

Some things seem to be a concern for all of us.  Our appearance is usually something that we want to be the best possible.  We look in the mirror, make certain that our hair is somewhat kept, check the way our clothing fits, and ponder whether or not we seem to be what we expect.  One of the most universal concerns we have may be whether or not we look too fat.  This is basically to check what condition our bodies are in as compared to others we may see or admire.  Much of this overall appearance is indeed determined by the way our skin fits us.  When we see too much fat in the wrong places, we may be disappointed.  The truth is, much of the fat our bodies contain may not be visible to the eye at all.

We Need Fat for Some Things

When it comes to our basic physical needs, fat is one of them.  Many of our body parts depend on some kind of fat to nourish them and keep them in good condition.  The brain is very dependent upon certain kinds of fat to keep it functioning as it should.  Fat should be found around some of the nerves as well as in the bone marrow.  Some fat is responsible for helping to regulate our temperature.  It also helps to store some vitamins.

Fat May Contribute to Health Problems

It is pretty well-known that the wrong kinds of fat can cause serious health issues.  Visceral fat is thought to raise the risk of stroke, heart disease, some diabetes, and some cancers.  Belly fat is thought to be an indicator of some of the chances we may have of developing some of these problems later on.  It is important to recognize this.

We Keep Track of Body Fat as an Indicator of Good Health

Many of us probably use some kind of scale to get a general idea as to whether or not we have a proper amount of body fat.  A body mass indicator, or BMI scale, has become popular.  Many of them use our frame size, height, weight, and age as factors.  Once they are calculated, we may determine a general score.  If we are over it, we are considered to be obese or overweight.  It is not a perfect system, but it can give us an idea of how we compare to some kind of a norm.
