Exercise in Water Without Owning a Pool

By Tom Herrin

With the increasing amount of attention given these days to the need for people to exercise, it has become a booming business.  I see many of these workout camps as I drive around town. Groups of people are out sweating and straining to improve their conditioning.  Some of it almost looks painful. I like to work out, but I like to keep it in check. A good workout can just about always make people feel better.  Not only does it work the muscles and make the blood flow, it also provides a feeling of accomplishing something worthwhile. One of the easier kinds of exercise is done in water.  It is not without work, but it has a lot of benefits that make it more tolerable than many of the other ways.

It Is a Low Impact Exercise

Activity in the water is about as low impact as it gets.  The water can support the body and prevent the more harsh actions of other activities.  The buoyancy prevents the actions of gravity from placing too much stress of the parts. Moving around creates work while still protecting from injury.

It Can Burn Calories

Moving around in the water naturally burns calories.  The water provides resistance all of the time. It has been said that water can provide as much as 42 times the resistance of air.  People can easily burn up to 500 calories in an hour of activity. Even if there is no particular exercise involved, simply moving around at a steady pace can do some good things. Walking, swimming, or going through an exercise routine will all yield good results.

It Cools as You Exercise

There are not many exercises in which you can participate and avoid excessive overheating while doing so.  Exercising in the water can maintain some level of hydration as it cools as well. While it may be great to have your own pool, there are plenty of facilities available.  Many are set up for regular aquatic exercise classes of groups. They may be operated by cities or other organizations. If you want something that may be a little less stressful, try some kind of activity involving the water.  It can be a great way to exercise or unwind from a hectic day and get rid of a lot of that stress.
