Spread a Few Hugs Around for Better Health

By Tom Herrin

People often see a lot of contradictory information around these days.  A lot of it is for good reason. This world is full of people with problems.  It rightfully makes many people a little uneasy to touch or be touched. When people use touch to show natural affection for others, it should be genuine.  Children and other family members are the best place to start. Expressing feelings for them with hugs can go a long way toward strengthening bonds and building stronger mental and emotional health.  There are those who really have a difficult time expressing physical affection for others, but it can become easier with practice.

Hugs Can Relieve Fears

Everyone has had the experience of comforting a child who is afraid.  There is nothing quite like sharing a hug with someone who is afraid or insecure.  It can provide an almost instant cure for those feelings. The fact is that it is not only for children.  Many adults respond every bit as much as children. The message given that someone understands what they are going through is pretty reassuring.  It says that they are not alone. It is a great way to show love or comradery. It can build a better support system at work as well as at home.

Hugs Can Relieve Stress

No one is exempt from stress.  There seem to be no barriers. Young or old alike can be affected.  Those who feel that kids don’t have any need to think back. Children may feel that they have no control over the things that affect them.  It can be a pretty helpless feeling. Hugs can help them to feel a stronger support system and bond with parents and other family members. There is often a great need to help them to improve their overall feeling of self worth.

No One Ages Out of Hugs

Even though we may think so, people never grow too old for hugs.  The problem may be that they have not had them for so long that they have become out of touch with life.  I enjoy walking through a nursing home and taking the time to speak to some of the older people who seem to be tucked away with their minds far off.  It is often simply that they have been ignored so long that they have developed some isolation around them as a coping skill. It is usually surprising what they have to say and offer in perspective. If you really want to make a difference in someone’s life, try speaking to an older person and sharing a touch or hug.  Chances are it will make your day much brighter as well as theirs. I promise you will make a friend.
