It Never Hurts to Correct Walking Style
By Tom Herrin
In this day and age, there is much more information available on how to do almost anything right, or better. Form and technique are critical parts of success. Whether it is running, playing a game, or using some other skills, knowing how to do it correctly can make a world of difference. Walking with better technique is no exception. Even though most people walk, they often do it to get around from one place to another, or they may choose to do it as a means of getting exercise. There are a few things that may be done that can have an impact on walking to make it much easier.
Staying Upright May Increase Performance
As with most other things, holding themselves more upright can improve breathing as well as help to avoid soreness and aches. It is recommended that the head and chin be held as level as possible as compared to the ground. Some suggest that a person should imagine a string being attached to their head pulling them upward. Keeping the eyes focused about 20 feet ahead can help to maintain this head position. The other name for all this is correct posture.
Footwork Needs to Be Right
Some people can take a pounding as they walk. Striking the ground with the feet without a good rhythm or method can even cause injury, in some cases. In order to make the most out of the walking stride, it is best to hit with the heel first, then roll across the foot and push off with the toes. In general, the longer the feet can remain in contact with the ground, the better the person will be propelled. Another good point is that the real power is from the feet while they are behind the person. Some make this mistake reaching too far ahead in an effort to pull themselves forward.
Improve Technique and Relax
Walking should be somewhat relaxing, even when it is done for exercise. Without using good form, walking can tire a person out and cause them to dread the idea of going. I have had good and bad experiences with walking. As I have learned better ways to do it, I have found that I look forward to each time I walk and am able to walk farther without feeling so worn out. See what you can do to make your walk better and enjoy it.
