Working Shifts Should Not Mean Poorer Health
By Tom Herrin
As people adapt to whatever kind of job they have, it can sometimes mean that they have to make some pretty significant changes in their lifestyles. For those who work shifts, it may mean almost completely reversing their sleep and activity cycle. There are more than a few people who fall into this category because it is estimated that there may be nearing 10 million people or more who work shifts. While the pay is sometimes a good incentive for them, there are some issues with health that can affect them are not so good. Knowing what they are and being prepared can help people to deal with them better.
Tired and Weary May Seem the Norm
When people work shifts, it is not uncommon for them to have difficulty with sleeping. If this becomes a pattern, it can turn into some pretty serious problems when it comes to work or travel. Some studies have shown that the instances of accidents at work or on the commute may be higher among those who work shifts. Many of these workers also tend to eat poorly due to the fact that they may do so alone and eat foods that are convenient rather than healthy.
Good Prevention Can Help
As with anything, finding ways to do to prevent problems can be a good idea. Developing a good habit of eating on a schedule is always a benefit to health. Making sure to include highly nutritious foods can help to see that they do the most good. Staying with a good exercise program is another thing that no one should be without. Especially when they work unusual times and schedules, it can be part of a good plan to do something almost every day. It is too easy to fall into a routine of avoiding exercise because of being on such a different schedule from the rest of the family.
Determine the Duration
If you are going to be on shifts from now on, it is best to make a plan with a calendar for all of that. If the shift is more temporary, then you may want to develop a calendar specific to that particular schedule. Knowing how you will address your needs is a big part of planning. Be sure to include family activities so that you don't end up getting left out. Without thinking ahead, working shifts can have some really bad effects on health and family relations. With a little forethought, it can work well.
