Meals Can Be Like Going to a Circus

By Tom Herrin

Something that many people may remember about meals they ate a few years ago is that, in order for them to be healthy, they should have a lot of brown and white.  They made them pretty plain.  Another thing that may be remembered by many people is that one of the most colorful events they ever attended was a circus.  A way to get some good results in making meals healthier may be to combine the two, sort of -- remember the colors of the circus when making your meals.  At least, it seems that adding more color to meals can be a great way to make them healthier.  That formula is simple enough.

Reds May Rule

Having the color red in a dish often appears to make it stand out.  It makes a great picture.  The red almost looks as if it will jump out of the picture.  Red can do much more than that, however, as some of the red foods have some good things to offer.  Some of them are believed to cut the risk of diabetes, reduce chances of some heart disease, and improve the skin.  The foods are a pretty diverse group.  A few of them are red peppers, beets, strawberries, cranberries, and cherries.

Yellows Are Still Different

For many years, some people seemed to think of yellow, or orange, foods as a kind of substitute for greens.  In fact, these yellows make a significant contribution on their own.  A few of the things they offer are to help the eyes, increase blood flow, and decrease the risk of some cancers.  Some of these foods are what may be called very American and have unique flavors.  A few of them are sweet potatoes, yellow squash, corn, mango, and cantaloupe.  For them, it may be a matter of trying something people haven't thought about.

Enjoy the Colors

Having lots of colors in a meal can be really fun.  One of the most striking things about going to the circus for me was always the vast amount of colors.  They were impressive and eye-catching.  Including those colors in meals can be every bit as good.  When we can do this while making meals healthier at the same time, we have done well.  We like to see just how colorful we can make our meals and encourage each member to add something they want.  It works pretty well for us.  See what it can do for you.
