Osteoarthritis and Your Chiropractor

By Randi Morse

Have you ever played the game where you ask someone else which sense they would rather lose? That game is difficult enough, but what if you had to answer which appendage you would rather lose? While we can find accommodations once we have lost usage of a body part, it is only when we have a difficult time with our appendages that we realize how much we have come to rely on them. Take, for example, your hands. How often do you use your hands on a daily basis? Losing the ability to do simple things such as twisting lids off a jar or driving can seriously limit your Independence.

Osteoarthritis

If you have ever experienced pain in your fingers or your hands when you are doing something simple, there's a possibility that you have osteoarthritis. People who have osteoarthritis find that their hands hurt after doing the most simple of tasks, and they often also discover that their hands feel stiff, especially after they have been resting for a while. The wear and tear we inflict on our hands and fingers can contribute to osteoarthritis. At best, osteoarthritis is a frustrating condition. At worst it's an extremely painful one.

Treatment Options

If you are dealing with some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis, your doctor may recommend that you wear a wrist or hand brace. Hand braces give the fingers and wrist a chance to rest so that you do not do further damage to your joints. If you are only just starting to have a slight bit of pain and stiffness, you can purchase a wrist or hand brace at your local pharmacy.

Using ice and heat to help soothe aching fingers is also a good idea. By using the 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off technique, you should easily be able to determine if the heat or ice actually helps your situation. Finally, anti-inflammatory medications may go a long way to helping relieve pain in your fingers, but it is not recommended to use any sort of narcotics to help ease the pain.
