The Health Benefits That Come with Yoga

We have heard so much about yoga and the power that yoga has to improve our minds, bodies, and souls. But to so many of us, yoga just seems like a bunch of people stretching together in a room with calming music on.

Contrary to popular belief, yoga is so much more. It gives us a chance to reach levels of focus that are only attainable in certain forms of meditation, as well as achieve a level of flexibility and strength that may not be feasible in other types of exercise. Yoga is extremely beneficial for our mental and physical health, and as long as we are trying to use some sort of yoga in our exercise regiments, we can expect excellent outcomes.

Yoga is an integral part of developing balance in our bodies. Our sense of proprioception, or the knowledge of our body’s positioning and layout, is improved dramatically through the use of yoga. Incorporating yoga into our exercise regiments over long periods of time improves our balance and our stability for years on end. Even professional athletes turn to yoga as a way to improve their performance outcomes, as balance and stability is important throughout all levels of sports. From football to hockey to even golf, all different types of athletes have found yoga to help improve performance.

A big part of yoga emphasizes our breathing. When we are regulating our breathing and ensuring that each breath is the same duration and intensity, we are bringing the maximum amount of oxygen into our bodies. This oxygen is absorbed into the blood through the lungs. Our alveoli, which are small air sacs in the middle of the lungs, contain small capillaries, which transfer oxygen into the blood through permeable membranes. Regulating our breathing not only has healing properties, but it can improve our overall focus and in turn our mental health. Take ten minutes at the end of your day for a couple of easy yoga poses in order to help de-stress and fall asleep fast.

If you are looking for a way to boost your exercise routine in a way that is effective in all facets of your health, look no further than yoga and the results will come after just a few sessions. There are plenty of classes available in most communities, and often times the first class is free. So why not give it a shot - what do you have to lose?
