Learn More About Binge Drinking’s Costs

Binge drinking is not easy to ignore. Accidents, deaths, and domestic violence all repeatedly link up with binge drinking in the news. And most of us known someone who has gone way past the normal mark in the binge drinking arena.

But how does that play out with us?

When it’s Friday night after a long week, having a few brews or glasses of wine often seems like a really great way to wind down.

And of course Friday night spots spill over with people doing just that. For many it is a giant end of the week tension/gripe/tiredness release. And in many cases that works without too many major costs. Everybody trades stories and complaints and as they relax into the weekend.

But it’s good to know the risks.

Understanding your limits and acting accordingly can keep a Friday night session with your friends well within the limits. Making sure there is a good dinner, drinking lots of water, and drinking slowly through the evening can make it a fun night instead of a nightmare.

Official definitions of binge drinking say men should not drink more than three pints of strong beer and women should not drink more than two large glasses of wine in one sitting.

They also say danger signs can be drinking quickly, regularly drinking more than the recommended limits and drinking to get drunk.

From an individual angle, you might ask more questions to see where you stand.

Would the evening with your friends be just as much of a fun time-out to blow off steam if you skipped the alcohol and enjoyed talking to everyone and savoring a great pizza? Try it – you might be surprised how well it works. Or, do you feel compelled to run the Friday night loop, drink in hand, ignoring how you know you will feel on Saturday morning, and the other possible social fallouts that often happen, when people say or do things they normally would not.

If you are being honest with yourself and you see binge drinking hovering on your radar as an ongoing or ballooning problem, start taking action. Start cutting back to see if that works, or find some other great way to spend Friday night with friends. Just skipping the whole drinking setting can sometimes help a lot. Friday night is full of concerts, plays, sports and other options that could  put you into a much better spot.

But if your initial attempts to slow binge drinking down do not make a dent, don’t wait, talk to your doctor or a counselor about more options. Binge drinking will not just disappear, but you could make it back off in your life.
