To Run or Not to Run: Is It Healthy or Not?

By Genevieve Cunningham

People who love to run are generally pretty fanatical about their favorite fitness routine. They claim it gives them energy, helps them lose weight, and makes them feel better all of the time. And truthfully, running can be incredibly beneficial to your health. But what about everyone else? You know … those of us who despise running, but we feel the pressure to get out and pound the pavement. Should we feel guilty for skipping the running trails? Or can we all agree that maybe running isn’t the be all end all of exercise? Take a look at these pitfalls that often accompany running, as well as some tips for making the experience better if running really is your thing.

Running is Tough on the Joints

The consistent striking motion of your feet hitting the pavement can put a lot of pain and tension on the joints, especially the knees and ankles. And the worse your running form, the more pronounced this pain is likely to be. How can you avoid this? Practice good form, get supportive shoes, and stretch both before and after you begin your jog.

Running Can Make Your Back Hurt

In the same way that the pounding of your feet jars your joints, it can also cause damage to your back. It can cause stiffness, soreness, and a problem with chronic pain. In some cases, it can cause the vertebrae of the spine to become misaligned, which can then lead to further pain and discomfort. How can you avoid this? Practice good running form, buy supportive shoes, and take your run to a ground that is softer and that provides a little give  -- grass instead of a sidewalk, for example.

So, I Don’t Have to Run?

Though running can be great for you, it’s not necessary. There are plenty of other exercises out there that can easily take its place. Aerobics, swimming, walking … take your pick. The key to working out and making it stick is finding something that suits you and your lifestyle. If running isn’t it, that’s OK! And now you even have some substantial reasons to skip the trails without the guilt.

But What If I Love Running?

If you really love running and want to continue, do it! If you want to protect yourself from damage, try adding another beneficial aspect to your routine: Chiropractic care. It has long been shown that chiropractic care and exercise are incredibly effective at managing long-term pain. And with regular care, you may be able to keep your spine and joints properly aligned, which then relieves pain and keeps you running without discomfort.
