Finding That Work Life Balance: Tips for Health & Success

Everyone spends a lot of time looking for that elusive work life balance. Does it even exist? Does anyone ever find the line between work and play? It is definitely tough, especially in America, to find the right amount of work versus the right amount of family time. We are driven to succeed, and as a result, we often work too much and let other aspects of our lives suffer. In order to find the balance in your life, check out these tips for working, playing, and balancing it all.

Learn the Value of the Word NO

This is so hard for so many people. We are too nice...plain and simple. The boss needs you to work 2 extra hours? Ok. You are supposed to be at your son’s game, but you coworker needs you to cover? Sure. Instead...JUST SAY NO!! This tiny 2 letter word will give you more power than you ever thought possible. You don’t have to use it in every circumstance, but you should learn when to use it and how to use it to make your life better. When you can’t find the balance that you need, look first to the word no, and see if you are using it appropriately in your life.

Get to Work on Time...But Leave on Time Too

Everyone has done it. You get to working on a project and it’s time to go home. You decide to work just a little bit extra to get a little bit ahead. Then, you look up and it has been hours! Stop! If you need more time, do it when you get back. Trust me...it will still be there. Instead, make sure that you get to work on time (or a little early), and then leave on time as well. You are not paid for those extra few minutes. So, stop giving away your precious time for free. When it’s time to go, pack up your stuff, leave your work at the office, and go home and enjoy your family and friends.

Unplug

This requires you to actually put down your technology. Admittedly, this is pretty hard to do, but if you can manage, it will certainly be worth it. When you get home, put your phone, tablet, or laptop in the other room. Then, unwind with family or friends without any distractions. Don’t take emails from work. Don’t answer texts from coworkers. Just turn it off. While this will take some serious self discipline in the beginning, it will soon become extremely pleasant to just turn everyone else off for a while and relish in you and your loved ones.

Finding work life balance is certainly tough. It requires effort, dedication, and some serious conscious effort. While it may take some adjustment time to get this done, you will soon find that striving for balance is worth the effort. Use these tips to get you started down the right path and to find the right amount of work and play to make your life as happy as possible.
