Why Your Health Goals Are ""Running"" Away

Many people enjoy a good run. Running can be calming, strenuous, and for some, downright therapeutic. If you are serious about weight loss or changing the composition of your body, however, then running might not be enough. If you have been pounding the pavement for months, yet the results just aren’t showing, check out these common reasons why running might not be enough for your body and health goals.

It Burns a Lot of Calories (But Not as Many as You Think)

It’s true that running can burn a lot of calories. It is a lot of work on the body, and it generally causes you to break a good sweat. But, according to a popular weight loss site, it takes 45 minutes of running at a 10 minute per mile pace for a person of approximately 150 pounds to burn around 500 calories. If you are not running for that long or that quickly, then you can subtract a significant amount of the calories burned. Running is tough, so it seems like the calories are melting off, but in most instances, this just isn’t the case.

You Have Built a Tolerance

The first few times you run are likely to be brutal. You will hurt all over, have sore muscles, and feel as though you can barely move. Running can be tough! Pretty soon, however, your body will grow accustomed to the workload. You will have to go longer, faster, or on new terrain to get the same results. For many, this doesn’t happen. We run the same time, same distance, and at the same location, meaning that your body just isn’t challenged like it used to be.

Your Body Needs Resistance

Cardio is great for the body. It builds endurance, lung strength, and gets your muscles in great shape. It doesn’t, however, bring any resistance or similar challenges to your body. If you are looking to really change your body, you need to add some sort of weight to the routine. This is one of the quickest and most efficient ways to sculpt the body. While running can burn some calories and get you in great cardiovascular shape, it might not provide the sculpting effect that you have been working for.

Running is still great exercise, so you don’t have to quit the activity completely. If you want to change your body, however, then it is necessary to change it up and challenge your body on a regular basis. Change your speed, run intervals, and add weights to get a few more results without giving up your favorite activity.
