Should You Break Up with Your Gym?

By Sara Butler

You work hard to take care of your body through proper diet and exercise, but simply going to the gym isn’t enough to help you meet your goals. There are plenty of gyms out there that don’t pass muster when it comes to supporting you and your health goals. Here are a few reasons you may want to break up with your gym and look for someplace new.

You Pay But Don’t Play

One of the worst things in the world is paying for a gym membership you don’t use. Many fitness centers have great rates and perks to lure you in to sign up for a membership. Even if you’re getting a great rate, if you’re not using the place, then it’s time to end things. Pay a little more for a trial period at a gym that you will actually use!

The Atmosphere Isn’t Supportive

One of the reasons you joined a gym in the first place was to help you achieve health and fitness goals, but if you’re in an environment that doesn’t support that, then what’s the point? What kinds of things are red flags for this? If your gym has the following, then you need to find someplace new:

  • Cleanliness issues
  • Limited hours
  • Poor gym philosophies

Don’t keep going to an atmosphere that doesn’t make you feel supported.

The Staff Constantly Tries to Sell You Stuff

If the staff at your current gym is constantly trying to sell you supplements and other annoying things, or if they push a certain diet, then it’s time to get out. Check out the credentials of anyone trying to sell you something or giving you health advice.

The Trainers are a Problem

If the trainers at your gym are unhelpful or clearly lack the qualifications they need, then it’s time to consider a move. Many people experience problems at the gym such as the staff not being around a lot, staff that brush off your questions, or staff that just plain don’t seem to know what they’re talking about. Proper supervision at the gym is necessary to keep people safe and avoid injury.

Look at other Possibilities

You might simply be stuck in a rut at your gym, so explore what else is offered where you live. Many places have more than one option and you never know when another gym down the road may feel more like the place for you.

A gym is important to help you meet your fitness goals, so don’t settle for what you’ve got – find something better!
