Easy Ways to Eat Healthier

By Sara Butler

If thinking about healthy eating conjures images of bran muffins and prunes in your mind, then you need to think again. There are a lot of easy and tasty ways you can inject a little more health into your diet. Here are a few very easy ways to get started!

Forget the Packaged Foods

The easiest way to clean up your diet is to ditch anything that comes in a package in your pantry. These items are usually full of fillers and preservatives that are very bad for your overall health. Crackers, soups, cookies, microwave meals, and instant mixes need to be tossed into the trash and you need to recreate your pantry from scratch.

When going through your pantry, practice some tough love. Think about what you really need and then think about the things you could easily make yourself with better and more wholesome ingredients. You can create your own salad dressings, nut butter, and even fruit jam to have on hand.

Once your pantry has been cleared and you’re ready to restock, go for staples that are friendly to fresh produce. Things like herbs, spices, and whole grains are a great start. Olive oil, legumes, and some whole grain bread are great places to start!

Eat the Rainbow

You may not really know what foods you should eat to be healthy but there’s an easy way to make sure you’re getting enough variety in your diet: eat the rainbow. Make sure you have at least four to five different colors happening on your plate at once. Adding these colors will add nutrition and also texture and flavor. You won’t be bored if you aim to keep it colorful each and every meal!

Bring Lunch

Probably one of the biggest pitfalls when it comes to your diet is eating out. You can avoid this by taking your own lunch with you to work -- and it’ll save money too. Consider batch cooking at the beginning of the week so you have meals on hand for dinner and easy things to pack up and take with you to work or when you’re on the go. It’s good for your body and your wallet.

Swap Sweeteners

A new healthy eating strategy just isn’t complete without a treat, so make sure to get rid of refined sugar and go for natural sweetness instead. Fresh or frozen fruit in some Greek yogurt is a great way to help with the sweet cravings. A little dark chocolate, as long as it doesn’t contain too much added sugar, is a great treat too!

Eating healthy doesn't have to be complicated. If you start with these easy swaps, you're well on your way to a healthier you!
