These Nutrition Mistakes Might Be Killing You

By Sara Butler

Healthy foods tend to be more expensive than convenience foods, but the toll that is taking on society is more extreme than you may think. According to a report from The Lancet, as many as one-fifth of the deaths in the world can be contributed to a poor diet. It states that around the globe, about 11 million deaths last year were the result of poor diets that are linked to some diseases such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease. That's a scary statistic, but one you can avoid by making sure you don't make these diet mistakes.

You Don't Eat Nuts

Sometimes it's OK to go a little nuts. It's been found that people simply don't eat enough seeds and nuts as a normal part of their diet. In fact, most people only get about 12 percent of the recommended amount of nuts and seeds in their diets.

You should get around 21 grams of nuts and seeds per day to provide your body with heart-healthy fats, vitamins, protein, and fiber. Instead of opting for foods with unhealthy saturated fats, try having a handful of nuts as a snack instead.

You Don't Drink Enough Milk

Around the world, people are only getting about 16 percent of the recommended amount of milk they should. If you want to go by established dietary rules, then you need 435 grams of milk per day, which is a little over 15 ounces.

Making sure to include full-fat dairy in your diet has been linked to a lower incidence of obesity and it's been found to help children absorb Vitamin D better. Plus, it's great for your bones. So make sure you're getting enough milk!

You Don't Eat Enough Whole Grains

People simply don't eat enough whole grains. It's been found that most people get around 29 grams of whole grains per day when they should be getting about 125 grams.

When you incorporate enough grains into your diet, then you reduce your risk of heart disease, have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight, and improve your digestive health. You can add whole grains in easily by increasing certain items in your diet such as popcorn, whole-wheat pasta and bread, barley, and brown rice.

You Eat Too Much Salt, Sugar, and Processed Foods

Drinking too much soda, eating too much salt, and eating processed meat can increase your chances of serious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers. That's why it's important to limit these items in your diet.

Proper nutrition is very important to your continued health and wellness. If you ever have any questions about your diet or how it could be improved, the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic make an excellent resource!
