Personal Reflection: Questions to Ask For a Mental Health Check

We often reflect personally on the state of our physical health. We do things such as stepping on the scale to check our weight loss and gain. We gauge the fit of our pants. We constantly make little checks on our health, and when needed, we adjust accordingly.

When it comes to our mental health these types of little checks and balances are often forgotten. Our mental health is important, so making these types of personal reflections are crucial for our overall health and wellness. Though stepping on the scale or checking the fit of our clothing is easy and second nature, finding ways to self monitor our mental health is a little bit more difficult and requires conscious thought and effort. To help you get moving in the right direction, check out these three questions to ask yourself daily to monitor and maintain your mental health.

Do I Like and Enjoy My Current Physical State?

This might sound like a question to ask for physical health, but the truth is that physical and mental health are tightly linked. When we feel poorly about our physical health, our mental health suffers. We may experience depression, low self esteem, and feelings of being unworthy. Ask yourself how you feel about your body and appearance. If the answer is that you don’t like it, make some changes. Some great ways to improve your perception about your physical health include eating healthy, exercising, or even making minor adjustments to your wardrobe. Boost your personal perception, and you will boost your mental well-being by default.

Do I Spend Time With Positive People?

Sometimes we spend a lot of time with people who bring us down. These people are negative, and they may spend a lot of time either complaining about their lives or complaining about other people. This is a drain on our mental health. Try not to spend too much time with these kinds of people. Instead, surround yourself with people who are generally positive about life and its possibilities. If you don’t know anyone who fits this description, it is time to make new friends. You want to spend your time talking, laughing, and experiencing life in an uplifting manner, and the only way to accomplish this is by being with others who share the same vision for life.

How Do I Feel About Myself and Position in Life?

Really ask yourself how you feel about who you are as a person. Do you like your values? Are you living up to your potential? Are you settling in any way? These are very important questions to ask yourself to determine whether or not you are fulfilling your own goals. Self achievement and personal satisfaction are crucial for good mental health. Double-check your own progress, but don’t stress if you aren’t exactly where you want to be yet. Just readjust, make some changes, and keep plowing ahead.

Making mental health a priority is crucial for your overall health. Don’t let this aspect of your well-being slip by unnoticed. Instead, ask yourself these questions regularly and make changes when you need to. Your mental health makes you who you are, so keep on top of it and keep yourself healthy and happy for years to come.
