How to Handle Headaches

Starting at about the age of 12, I began to get horrible migraines. These were the kind that put you in a bed in a pitch black room for hours at a time. They seemed to come out of nowhere, and the cause was unknown. After a few trips to the doctor, a strong medication was prescribed to help with the pain, but as far as avoiding them completely...no one had any advice.

This scenario is the case for many people. Headaches in general are the number one complaint of American adults. Whether it’s a migraine like I suffered, a cluster headache, tension, sinus, or stress headache, they are all painful and sometimes downright debilitating. When it comes to most headaches, the most common form of treatment is to mask the pain, but is that the only way? Take a look at some of the most common treatments for headaches and their varying success rates.

Medication

Whether you take over the counter medications like Advil or Aleve, or something stronger like my medication for migraines, medication can sometimes take the edge off of headaches. While this treatment option is good for relieving some pain, it technically only treats the symptom. This method may be great for the occasional headache or milder forms of head pain, but may not be the best option for ongoing cases of headaches.

Caffeine

Yep, you read that right. For some reason, caffeine can help with some headache pain. Though this is most certainly not a long term solution, a minor or temporary headache may be relieved by grabbing a Coke or cup of coffee. This is especially true for headaches caused by caffeine withdrawal and some forms of tension headaches.

Massage

A lot of headaches come about because some part of the neck or back is tight with tension. For this reason, some headaches may be relieved by a good neck rub. If you suffer from a headache, and you can also feel tight muscles in your neck, try asking someone to rub it out for you. While it might not work every single time, it can provide some relief in some cases.

Chiropractic Care

For a huge portion of headaches, chiropractic care can both treat the pain and possibly prevent the headache from occurring. Since so many headaches begin in the neck and back, regular chiropractic care can help by keeping the spine aligned and in the best shape. This leads to less pain, a greater range of motion, and a healthier spine in general.

For chiropractic care for headaches or any other pain that you may suffer, a chiropractor at The Joint may be able to help. With walk-in appointments and affordable pricing, help for your headaches may be just around the corner. Let a chiropractor at The Joint align your spine properly for headache relief, a healthier body, and a happier, pain free life.
