7 Beauty Myths You Can Brush Off

As women, we sometimes stick religiously to our beauty routines for fear that straying from them will cause us to breakout, look drab, or damage our looks.  Some of the health and beauty advice that has been handed down from our great grandmothers to us may not even be all that valid.  Look over the following beauty myths and see if you’re guilty of believing any of them.

1. H20

If you don’t drink tons of water everyday your skin will look old and lackluster – False; according to David Bank, M.D., a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, New York, “no amount of water makes skin glowy.”  While water is definitely needed for good mental and physical health, it doesn’t change the appearance of your skin all that much.  What can help skin to look more hydrated is moisturizer.

2. Removing Makeup

Sometimes women get so tired before bed that they forget to wash their makeup off; this can lead to fear that our skin is going to breakout. Skipping a couple of days of washing your face won’t do anything, so relax.  To make it easier to take your makeup off, you can leave makeup remover cloths by your bed, and make sure your pillow case is clean to avoid spreading bacteria.

3. Greasy Food

Have you ever heard that by eating greasy foods, your skin will look like a pizza?  Well, that is not true.  According to Marnie Nussbaum, M.D dermatologist in New York, “greasy foods don’t cause pimples unless you actually wipe them on skin.”  Very interesting!  What can cause breakouts are milk and refined carbs.  So switch to brown rice and whole wheat pasta.

4. Makeup

Have you ever heard that wearing makeup daily can clog your pores and cause acne?  I have too.  But according to Women’s Health Magazine, this just isn’t the case; “wearing makeup consistently won’t actually make your skin worse.”  What can make your skin worse is not washing your makeup off at night.  So make sure you remove all of your makeup before bed and wash and moisturize.

5. Shampoo And Conditioner

If I don’t switch up my shampoo and conditioner often enough,  I feel like I may be damaging the health of my hair. But this is also a bunch of baloney.  Unless you notice your hair is looking dull and flat, you don’t really need to switch up your hair products because they’re still doing their job.

6. Lipstick

If you ever thought that there was no foolproof way to make sure your lipstick doesn’t get on your teeth, you’re wrong.  After applying lipstick all you need to do is stick your clean pointer finger in your mouth and press your lips against it, and then pull it out.  The excess lipstick gets on your finger and not on your teeth.

7. Heat

Some people think that if they don’t use heat on their hair too often then they don’t need to use a heat protectant on their hair. This is false.  You should use a heat protectant on your hair every time you blow dry, straighten or curl your hair.
