Easy Ways to Eat Well on a Budget

By Sara Butler

No matter what your budget, healthy food is accessible to you. A lot of people find themselves overwhelmed with food and aren’t sure where to begin -- especially when they want to focus on their health. Often, the cost of food is the most daunting aspect of it. Don’t let it be! Here is how you can eat healthy on a budget.

Baby Steps

Switching from a diet full of convenience foods to whole foods can seem like a big process to undertake. But it’s important to realize you don’t have to switch everything up overnight. Start in just one area and then go from there.

Perhaps adding fresh vegetables to your diet is a good first step. Endeavor to have one fresh vegetable at each meal to start. Once you have that mastered, add a fruit. Then once that is in the bag, switch out the cooking oil you use. It’s these little steps that will make the biggest difference in your diet and ultimately your health. And over time, you’ll figure out how to find healthy food in less expensive ways than you may realize.

Take a Look at Your Budget

You may think you don’t have enough money to make the switch to something more expensive such as grass-fed beef, but if you take a look at your budget, then you’ll probably find a way to carve it out. How many times a week do you buy fancy coffee drinks? Take a hard look at where your money is actually going and you may be surprised by how easy it is to move around your spending to things you want to prioritize, such as healthier food.

Plan Ahead

You can save a lot of time and money by planning your meals out in advance. Cooking extras to freeze or store in the fridge for lunches or dinners is a great way to save money and give yourself delicious food choices.

At the beginning of each week, take some time to write out a menu, then make a list of the ingredients you need. Take your time to search out healthy recipes. It may take time and energy, but it’s worth to see the impact on your health as well as your bank account.

Eating well on a budget is possible if you know how to juggle things around to make healthy eating a priority.
