Sensitive Stomach: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

By Ashley Chapman

Do you constantly have stomach problems after you finish eating? It can be difficult to enjoy eating out with friends and family if you are constantly dealing with an upset stomach. Learn what may be causing your sensitive stomach, symptoms, and the best foods to eat to prevent it from occurring.

Causes of a Sensitive Stomach

There may be various reasons why you may be suffering from a sensitive stomach. A food allergy could be the cause. If you know that you are not allergic to any specific foods, you may be suffering from a either irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease.

IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome,m has similar symptoms to a sensitive stomach. IBS is more common in women than men are and causes inflammation in the intestines. With the intestines being impacted by this syndrome, you may experience a change in your bowel movements, have gas, and possibly abdominal pain.

If you suffer from inflammatory bowel disease or IBD, your doctor will run tests to determine what specific type of IBD you are suffering from. Symptoms are similar to IBS but you may also experience diarrhea and have chronic pain.

Symptoms

Whether you are suffering from a disease or have a non-diagnosed sensitive stomach, symptoms will vary. Some common symptoms may include:

  • Indigestion
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Acid reflux
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea

Tips to Avoid Upsetting Your Stomach

If you suffer from a disorder or have a sensitive stomach, it is vital that you make lifestyle changes to lower your pain and discomfort.

The way that you are eating is the first step in treating a sensitive stomach. Eating smaller portions will make it easier for your stomach to digest portions.

While it can be hard to eat slowly when you are hungry, slowing down how fast you eat will improve the amount of trapped gas in your stomach. You may also need to eliminate certain foods from your diet that are known to irritate. Some of these foods include dairy, spicy foods, alcohol and fried foods.

Best Foods to Eat

When you are dealing with a sensitive digestive system, it is also important to include foods that will be easy on your stomach. Try to incorporate some of these foods in your diet:

  • Fish
  • Yogurt
  • Egg whites
  • Oatmeal
  • Watermelon
  • Rice

Remember that adding various spices or oils may also irritate your stomach. Be mindful of when you are having an upset stomach and what you had eaten that day. This will help you eliminate foods or spices that may be irritating your stomach.
