Reinventing Your Run
By Donna Stark
Whether it involves a relationship, a hobby, or a career, most of us enjoy adding a little spice to our life when things get boring, don't we? It helps to break up the monotony, it adds a fresh perspective to the moment, and in many cases, it keeps us interested and focused on what is right in front of us. A little bit of "spice," or variety, can certainly kill extreme levels of boredom, and that couldn't be truer than when it pertains to our daily workouts.
One such form of exercise that can easily become tedious and dull if you aren't careful with it is running. Whether it's outdoors or indoors on a treadmill, allowing your running workouts to become a routine of boredom increases the chances that you will stop putting forth the effort. If you are slowly starting to get bored with your morning jogs, but aren't ready to throw the towel in yet, here are some simple suggestions on how to add some fun and variety into your routine.
Location
It's easy to lose interest if you are running under fluorescent lights or in the same neighborhood day after day, so mix it up a bit! Head to your local wooded trails, the beach, or any other location that is close to your home and try something new. In addition to the change in scenery, you may also come across new physical challenges with different terrain.
Speed
Add some variety to your run with different levels of intensity by choosing appropriate places along your course to add in some sprints. In addition to increasing your heart rate, it's also a great way to keep your excitement up. After your short sprint is over, walk until your heart rate and breathing stabilize and then resume your normal running speed.
Hills/Stairs
Increase the challenge of your run by adding plenty of hills and stairs. This can easily be done on both the treadmill (raising the incline) and while you run outside. Adding hills and stairs to your running workout will help to increase strength, endurance, and your overall fitness level.
Podcasts
Yes, we all have our favorite songs we like to listen to when exercising, but they can get old after a while, can't they? So listen to something new! Download a podcast on a subject you are interested in or listen to that new comedian you've been wanting to hear. The options are endless!
Extra Spice
Adding that little bit of spice to your runs is a great way to keep your workouts interesting while also continuing to challenge your body. Just remember to stay hydrated and pay attention to your surroundings if you are in a new location!
