Breathing Easy at Home
By Donna Stark
Home is where the heart is but it's also where poor air quality is too. If you are like millions of others and are spending more time than usual at home, you may want to think about ways to improve the quality of the air you are breathing. Between the toxins and mold spores floating around your head to the dust mites and pet dander on your furniture, it's no wonder why everyone's allergies have been acting up! Here are a few tips on how to breathe easy while hanging out at home.
Keep a Clean House
In addition to reducing the stress caused by living in an unorganized home, keeping your house clean will also decrease the chance of dust and dander from building up. Get everyone involved to make sure the carpets are vacuumed, the furniture is dusted, the floors are mopped, and the bedding is washed. Every area of the house that can get dirty needs to be cleaned regularly.
"Plant" Some Fresh Air
Want to add some extra cheer to your home as well as some natural air filters? Head on over to your local nursery and stock up on some houseplants! Certain plants, such as ferns, ivy, and peace lilies are known to yank the contaminants right out of the air and right out from under your nose. Just be sure to check the toxicity level of the ones you are considering if you have children or pets!
Change Your Filters and Clean Your Ducts
The air filters and ducts in your home are often the lifeline of the house if you have allergy sufferers so be sure to pay careful attention to how often they need to be changed or cleaned. And don't forget to check the other filters (vacuum and clothes dryer) in your home too! They are equally as important.
Open the Windows
In case you forgot what fresh air feels like, why don't you find out by opening some windows? Time and time again, it has been shown that indoor air is often more polluted than the air outside. Opening a couple of windows throughout your house will help clear out the junk and bring in the good stuff. It may even help relieve some of your pent-up stress too!
Breathe Easy
Clearing your home of toxins, dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores doesn't need to be complicated. With some simple adjustments to your lifestyle, improving the air quality in your home is easier than you think!
