Improved Posture for Improved Health!
By Donna Stark
There are plenty of wise things our mothers and teachers say to us over the years, but some of the most important are their messages to "Stop slouching!" and "Stand up tall!". And although you probably thought the only concern was how your appearance looked, the truth is, there are more important reasons to be mindful of your posture, reasons that can have a direct effect on your overall health and wellness. Take a look at why you still need to listen to those wise words from those who care for you the most.
Reduced Health Issues
You may not feel like your posture is out of whack all the time but how do you feel overall? Are you experiencing backaches, neck pain, headaches, chest pressure? Do your shoulders, wrists, hips, or knees hurt? Over time, poor posture will take a toll on your health! It can increase the risk of muscular issues, exacerbate joint dysfunction, decrease blood circulation, and cause more headaches than you wish to count. It can also lead to conditions you may not have even thought about such as carpal tunnel syndrome and varicose veins.
There's a reason why yoga teachers emphasize correct posture ... it helps you breathe! Think about it. Being slouched over decreases the amount of space your diaphragm has to release and contract with each breath. But when you lengthen your torso and pull your shoulders back, your airways are opened and your ability to breathe improves immediately.
Improved Brain Power
We need to feed our brains with plenty of nutrition, that's for sure, but let's not forget to feed it plenty of oxygen too. The brain requires oxygen to function properly, so when you correct your posture and improve your breathing, you are increasing its power. You will be able to think clearly, focus more, and concentrate better which will definitely increase your productivity during the day.
In addition to physical stress and strain, poor posture can also cause you to become fatigued more quickly. This is because it requires the body to expend more energy and work to maintain those bad positions you hold. By correcting your posture and becoming more efficient with your movements, you can start to look forward to increased energy throughout your days.
Your mom and teachers know what they are talking about and have set you on the right path. Now, it's up to you. Stand tall, pull your shoulders back, and reap all the health benefits that come from good posture. Your body will thank you for it!
