Time to Eat Healthy Fats!

By Donna Stark

If you have been wanting to increase your nutritional intake, you may have read that healthy fats are a necessity in any diet. But unlike the bad fats in our food supply that are easy to pick out, picking out the good ones can be a little confusing, can't it? So, what exactly is a healthy fat? And how can it be healthy? Well, not all fats are created equal and if you want to learn more about the good ones, keep reading!

Adding Healthy Fats to Your Diet

On one hand, we have bad fats. These are the fats that increase cholesterol and the risk of serious health conditions. And on the other hand, we have good fats. Good fats help to protect the heart and brain, and support optimal wellness of the body. Take a look at the following list of some healthy fats and how you can easily incorporate them into your diet.

  • Avocados - With their creamy texture and buttery finish, avocados are an extremely versatile ingredient to keep in the kitchen. Mash some up and spread on your morning toast, pop one into your morning smoothie, or cut them into slices and toss them on top of your sandwiches and salads.
  • Nuts - Almonds, walnuts, and cashews can be eaten plain as a snack or used as a topping on oatmeal, salads, and desserts. You can even make your own homemade nut butter from them.
  • Coconut milk - If you are looking for something to replace your standard gallon of milk in the refrigerator, try coconut milk! Use it for your morning cereal, oatmeal, or smoothies, or find some recipes online that call for it. If you like the flavor of coconut, you'll love using this as an alternative.
  • Olive oil - Olive oil is one of the easiest ways to incorporate healthy fats into your diet. You can use it for cooking, baking, salad dressings, and marinades.
  • Fatty fish - Most experts recommend that you have at least two servings of fatty fish each week, but with the endless array of options to choose from, you may end up eating more than that! Salmon, tuna, sardines, and trout are a few good choices that are easy to incorporate into your diet!
