A Healthy Home for a Healthy Season

By Donna Stark

The New Year is here! And so are the dreaded colds, flu, and other viruses that come with the winter season. Sure, we all try to avoid those nasty little buggers to the best of our ability, but sometimes, we still end up feeling a tad bit under the weather, don't we? And as a result, we hunker down in our homes until things take a turn for the better. Clearly, that's the right choice to make, as home is the best place to be when we feel lousy and sick, but it could be even better with the following suggestions from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.

Don't Turn Your Home Into a Sauna

Do you like to feel warm and toasty? We all do, but that doesn't mean you should crank the heat in your home so high that it resembles that of a sauna. Heat sucks the moisture out of the air which can dry your skin and disrupt your sleep, and there is nothing worse than disrupted sleep when you are feeling ill. Set your thermostat no higher than 72 degrees and keep some extra blankets around for the times you become chilled.

Moisturize Your Body by "Moisturizing" Your Home

It's always a good idea to keep a humidifier running in your home during the winter months. The air in your home is especially dry during the winter and that can lead to a lot of discomforts, especially if you are already sick. From dry, itchy skin to cracked, bleeding lips to irritated, painful noses to sore throats and respiratory issues, that dry air can certainly take its toll on you, which is why you need a humidifier in your home. Humidifiers increase your comfort during this difficult time by adding some much-needed moisture to the air.

Keep Everything Clean

As soon as you feel good enough to get out of bed, ease into some general cleaning and disinfecting throughout your home. You can eliminate a lot of the germs that are lurking around by wiping down the most common areas in the house. Pay special attention to door handles, light switches, remotes, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, and electronic devices. Also, be sure to wash your sheets and towels frequently! If you are banished to your bedroom and someone else is in the home, ask them to help out.

Start Feeling Better as Fast as You Can

By following the simple tips above, you can look forward to feeling better and getting back to your normal routines faster than you ever have before. Good luck and stay well during the winter season ahead!
