Would You Like To Control Your Own Health?

By Tom Herrin

Many of us look for ways to improve our health.  What we eat has a tremendous impact on our overall health and potential longevity.  There are as many diet plans as there are flavors of ice cream.  Some of those are very effective and some are not so much.  One thing for certain is that our success in changing our diets is closely associated with our personal commitment.  In order to experience the kind of results most of us desire, we have to make up our minds that the best progress is slow and steady.

Change Your Frame Of Mind

All too often people want to hurry up and lose weight so they can go back to eating the way they used to.  That won’t provide the change we really seek.  We would do well to analyze what a diet is.  What we eat is our diet as opposed to going on a diet where we refer to a specific weight loss plan.  Many diet plans are based on speeding up our metabolism by eating multiple small meals.  This often works but should not be done on a long term basis.  If someone needs to experience a jump start on weight loss, then this type of plan can be successful.  This type of program does not need to be the norm.  It has been proven that people with a high metabolism may experience unnecessary aging.  Our bodies aren’t made for that.  A slower metabolism actually allows us to age at a slower rate.

What You Eat Can Lengthen Or Shorten Your Life

The idea of being able to affect our potential life span by eating has been given more credit than once thought.  Studies have determined that the only type of diet that can truly increase the very life material, or DNA, is a low fat diet.  Low fat diets actually protect and sometimes lengthen the telomeres.  These are components of the DNA material that can be responsible for what we often consider dying of old age.  The ends of the telomeres unravel and lose their ability to reproduce healthy cells.  A low fat diet can reverse this is some cases.

There Are Plenty Of Things To Like

Sometimes it is just worth trying new foods.  We have to train ourselves to like things that might not appeal to us.  Creative recipes can help.  Just enjoying some simple foods can make us feel better overall.  We just have to realize that eliminating some high fats can increase our outlook.  So if you would really like to have more control over your own health, try reducing calories and fat.  Just doing that, along with a little exercise, might just change your life.
