How to Properly Cure Your Hangover

We’ve all had ‘em, and we all have our own cures for ‘em, but the truth is that dealing with a hangover actually requires some science. Usually a warm beer and a greasy cheeseburger is the solution offered up by the majority of hangover survivors, but in reality, these are the last things you want to put in your body when dealing with the physical symptoms of last night’s binge.

The nausea, headache, diarrhea and overall inability to move, are all due to your body chemistry changing from the chemical toxins in the alcohol. Although there is no real way to “cure” a hangover, there are things you can do to ease your symptoms. You want to stick with foods and beverages that will give your body back its fluids and nutrients that can break down those alcohol toxins. Stay away from grease, alcohol, coffee and citrus beverages. All these are sure to irritate your stomach and continue the nauseating cycle. Below are a few that will help get you back to life.

Water

A hangover is basically extreme dehydration. When you drink alcohol to excess, it drains your body of all its water. This is what causes the pounding headaches in the morning. In order to better prevent this symptom, try matching each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. If you forget that rule of thumb, pound water in the morning, granted you can keep it down.

Gatorade and Coconut Water

Even though sugary sport’s drinks like Gatorade are usually not the healthiest beverage option, they can do wonders for a hangover. They can be hydrating and filled with electrolytes, which will help soothe that headache. If you want a more natural option, try coconut water. It is higher in electrolytes than those sport’s drinks and is way better for you.

Potassium

Potassium is another electrolyte that hydrates you after a night out. Try eating bananas, kiwi and spinach to restore your body of fluids. If you can’t fully grasp the concept of eating solid food, try making a smoothie out of these potassium-rich fruits and veggies with some yogurt.

Eggs

Now, this is something I can get into. Eggs are not only yummy, but they are full of essential amino acids like cysteine and taurine. Since you probably did a number on your liver, the taurine can help improve its function and protect against liver disease. The cysteine helps diminish the acetaldehyde chemical that causes headaches due to your liver breaking down ethanol.
