How to Keep Your Balance When Things Keep Changing

By Sandy Schroeder

If you are like me, you often need to pause and collect yourself as today's news, agitated people, and other annoyances test your patience. I find I have to selectively watch the news to know where we stand with the pandemic, back away from people who tend to get too excited, and just find as many ways as possible to stay calm.

Finding ways to stay cool can make the difference between a good and a terrible day. As we all strive to stay healthy, take care of our families and hang onto our jobs, mental and physical health can be crucial.

Harvard Health focused on this issue recently, coaching us on ways to dial life back a little to keep our balance in a turbulent world.

Here are some of their ideas. See what you think.

Burn off some of those worries - When life simply becomes too much, try running up and down the steps, running in place, or doing a few jumping jacks. Use these injections of activity whenever you are tempted to yell or say something harsh.

Learn how to talk with annoying people - When we are cooped up much of the time, you may find that your buttons are being pushed by friends, family and co-workers. They may be trying their best too in these trying times, but it is easy to overreact to their messages. Give your recent discussions some thought and see if you can spot how they annoy you, and what you may be doing to bug them. Then use these tips:

  • Create some ready-made responses to gracefully sidestep people who agitate you
  • Learn to spot people who know how to jazz you up and avoid them if you can
  • Avoid toxic callers who tie up your time on the phone with all of the latest negative news
  • Know what makes you sad or angry and switch topics quickly

Learn how to defuse angry discussions - If you find yourself going over the same material with family members, do yourself and them a favor. Think about the topics that set both of you off and try to find substitutes that you both relate to. If you both love nature, pets and good food, stick with those. When other inflammatory topics come up, turn on some music, head out to the kitchen or suggest that the two of you talk later

Staying centered and calm can be absolutely crucial for everyone now. Take a deep breath and find the ways that work best for you.
