The Pain of a Stiff Neck

By Donna Kostiew

Do you sometimes feel as if you have mastered a new hobby with the amount of time you spend massaging, twisting, and even contorting your stiff neck? I see it all too often. I see people swinging their heads from side-to-side, holding their necks while sitting at their desks, or digging their fingers deep into their muscles tirelessly trying to rub away those painful spots. And for good reason. A stiff neck can make everyday activities difficult to perform and enjoy. Work, driving, spending time with family … actually, anything that adds to your quality of life can ultimately suffer from the pain and discomfort you may be feeling on a daily basis. But don't worry. Your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic can help relieve your pain from a stiff neck and bring some enjoyment back into your life.

Causes of Neck Stiffness

Knowing the causes of neck stiffness and how to treat the issue can help you manage and relieve your pain and discomfort. Let’s take a look at a few of the causes here.

  • Injuries – All kinds of traumatic events, no matter how serious, can cause muscle stiffness in the neck. These can occur from car accidents, personal injuries, sports injuries, or occupational injuries. It doesn’t take much for the neck and spine to be hurt, so be mindful of how you feel after such an injury.
  • Poor posture - Poor posture is an all too common problem for the majority of us. It can put a tremendous amount of strain on the neck and spine, it can limit our mobility, and bring discomfort to our lives, yet we often don’t even realize how much damage is being caused until we start to feel the pain.
  • Stress – Are you like me, in that you carry your stress and the weight of the world in your neck and shoulders? Excessive stress is a leading cause of neck pain because it tightens the muscles in that area of the body which contributes to your discomfort.
  • Insufficient pillow or mattress – This could be such an easy fix to make, especially if you wake up every morning with aches and pains. Take the extra time to find a pillow and mattress that supports and keeps your body in a healthy position throughout the night. Also, forget the stomach sleeping and try to sleep on your back as much as you can!
