Text Neck and How to Care for It

By Donna Stark

Are you sitting over your laptop or cellphone reading this? Are your shoulders slumped forward, is the screen you are reading this on at eye level? Turns out that bad habits and poor posture are the leading causes of text neck and spinal degeneration. Even as I am writing this, I have to remind myself to sit tall, to place my feet squarely on the floor, and to keep my shoulders pulled back. It’s so easy to forget these “posture rules” because so much of our environment encourages us to do the exact opposite.

The Bowling Ball that is Your Head

Consider this: the human head weighs an average of 12 pounds, so when you apply the math (I let somebody else do this), that means that an extra 60 pounds are being exerted on your neck and spine when you are bent over looking at the phone in your hand. In fact, for every inch that your head moves forward, the stress that is placed on the spine dramatically increases. We wouldn’t accept this for any other part of our body, so why do we so freely accept it for the most important part … our spine?

Symptoms of Text Neck

If you are thinking that the extra force on your spine doesn’t sound very good, you’d be right, and the symptoms that appear as a result of it can be described in one word … pain. Let’s take a look at some of them.

  • Headaches
  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Nerve irritation
  • Curvature of the spine
  • Degeneration
  • Early onset of arthritis

Tips to Prevent Further Damage

So is there anything that can be done to help prevent these health issues from happening? Yes! There are definitely some preventative measures that can be taken. Let’s take a look.

  • Call instead of texting
  • Keep screens at eye level
  • Strengthen your core and neck muscles
  • Stretch your back, neck, and shoulder muscles
  • Practice good posture every day
  • Take a break from using your phone
  • See your chiropractor
