How to Get Active During the Workday
By Sara Butler
One of the cornerstones of good health is to stay active. Many people work in jobs that keep them sedentary, and that is bad for overall health and wellness. If you’re looking to squeeze some more activity into your otherwise inactive day there are some tricks you can use at work to up the stakes to help you and everyone else in your office fit more activity into your day.
Why It’s Important
Have you heard that sitting is the new smoking? All that sitting around is now thought to be as dangerous to your health as smoking. That’s why you hear your chiropractor talk so much about the importance of exercise. Being more active during the day is a great way to improve the health of your back right along with the rest of your body!
Plan a Meeting the Right Way
If your office environment allows it, you should inquire about having walking team meetings. This can easily be done by creating a meeting agenda that is detailed so you can all walk and talk at the same time. Another great thing to do is assign someone to be a facilitator for the meeting so they ensure that everyone feels heard and has a chance to participate. This encourages both exercise and a more relaxed environment for everyone to discuss the items on the agenda!
Create an Office Posture Challenge
Good posture helps you to look better and feel better, and in the office, it can make you more productive too. This is a great reason to challenge everyone in your office to have better posture. You can do a companywide challenge that can last anywhere from a week to several months in which you reward members of the team for maintaining good posture. Think about some prizes you can offer to the winner that will help motivate people!
Fight the Afternoon Slump
No matter where you work it’s a common to encounter an afternoon slump in which you feel all of your energy is zapped right out of you. Instead of reaching for a sugary snack or a cup of coffee you should get some coworkers together and go for a quick 15-minute walk around the neighborhood. This can help give you a boost and keep you healthy.
