3 Healthy Tips to Enjoy Thanksgiving
By Virginia Laird
If you have walked through your local supermarket lately, you have been reminded that the holidays are upon us. As this festive time of year gets under way, there is plenty of reason to begin taking your health more seriously. While many think nothing of it, health and wellness experts admit that a great number of people gain up to 10 pounds this time of year. Rather than allowing this to be your norm, it is time to begin figuring out how to prevent such from happening to you. A few tips to help keep you healthy during the holidays include:
- Get plenty of sleep before the big meal
- Use a small plate to visit the buffet
- Watch your alcohol consumption
Get Plenty of Sleep Before the Big Meal
Throughout the holiday season, as you find yourself with a few more days off here and there, you could most likely be tempted to stretch your days into longer nights. Health and wellness experts suggest that staying up late (and not getting enough sleep) can prove to be detrimental to your health and encourage weight gain. Experts across the nation admit that the average adult should get at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. However, during the holidays, many find themselves with a lack of shut-eye. These experts suggest that where there is a lack of sleep, there can be an increased chance of illness. Start today making sure you are getting enough sleep.
Use a Small Plate to Visit the Buffet
You may have heard this before, but it is worth repeating. Health and wellness experts suggest that those who are watching their weight throughout the holidays should use a smaller plate at mealtime. Rather than finding the largest plate available and piling it to the ceiling, it is best to take it easy on the amount of food you choose to consume at each sitting. Research suggests that using a smaller plate can help prevent overeating. Give it a try at your next holiday gathering.
Watch Your Alcohol Consumption
Although, for many, alcohol seems to be a necessity when it comes to the holidays and parties, experts advise that it is best to take it easy on such consumption. These professionals suggest that adult beverages are loaded with empty calories which simply help pack on the pounds when consumed in large amounts (or too frequently). It can be a better choice to drink plenty of water which can keep you hydrated and help curb your appetite for these adult drinks.
Start planning now the variety of things you can do to stay healthy, enjoy the holidays, and keep the holiday weight gain at bay. Good Luck and Happy Holidays!
