When It's Actually OK to Act Your Shoe Size

By Stephen R. Farris

When you were growing up, your parents or teachers more than likely mentioned this term to you once or twice, "act your age, not your shoe size." Boy were they ever wrong (in most cases, that is). It seems there's really nothing wrong with acting your shoe size no matter what age you have become. As a matter of fact, it can be healthy to do so.

What I mean is, you're as young as you feel (yet another old saying). Even though our bodies have aged, as long as our minds are like the pyramids of Gaza, then we can still keep our minds sharp as a tack and continue to do the things that make us happy in life. However, there is one other element I forgot to mention.

Growing older does mean we will all probably experience aches and pains, that will gradually slow us down. But we can't let ourselves get down and out about it. It just means we might have to do a few extra stretches in the morning or take a walk to get everything awake and functioning.

Being and feeling young at heart might open you to a few new experiences in life, or maybe a lot. The possibilities could be endless in my opinion, such as:

  • Help maintain and/or improve your physical health
  • Boost your mental health and well-being
  • Prolong your life and keep you thriving as you grow older

There are numerous ways to keep your heart young and the mind sharp. There's nothing wrong with being a little spontaneous in life, escaping from the everyday humdrum we're accustomed to. Always keep your mind open to new and exciting adventures and opportunities.

Keeping our bodies in regular shape is not only essential to longevity, but for our health in general. Go out and join a group exercise program; not only will it help physically, but socially as well. Play recreational sports such as tennis. I have a 70-plus year-old cousin who still meets up with his buddies for morning doubles matches. Afterward, they usually go out to lunch and continue their socializing. They're enjoying life to the fullest simply because the live by the motto, you're as young as you feel.

There's also nothing more fulfilling and gratifying than tackling a home project yourself, rather than having it hired out and done by someone else. It can also be a new and challenging experience for you and when it's done, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment that you can do anything in life if you put your mind to it.
