3 Natural Ways to Improve the Quality of Your Sleep
Here's an alarming fact for you: according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), it is estimated that between 40 and 60 percent of adults have, to some degree, trouble sleeping during any given night. That's a lot of people counting sheep. And, personally, I know that I've been there. It's a terrible feeling- tossing, turning, and constantly looking at the time and mentally doing the math to figure out how much sleep you could still potentially get. While there is no one proven remedy that works for everyone's various nocturnal troubles, there are definitely ways to promote a good night's rest, sans any sort of medication. Here are a few of them:
#1: Set a sleep schedule for yourself.
Setting a regular sleep routine for yourself can help to re-set your biological clock, eventually getting it to a steady place. This isn't just a Monday through Friday plan, either- experts believe that, in order to promote the best quality of sleep, you should go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time seven days per week. Your first order of business is to decide what time you need to be up in the morning, and then work backwards. So if you need to be up by 6:30 am, you should aim to be in bed by 10:30 pm and to have the lights out by 11.
#2: Snack smartly in the evening.
What you eat can dramatically effect your quality of sleep. Studies have indicated that the ideal night time snack that works to promote restful sleep is a combination of carboydrates, calcium, and protein, which boosts seratonin production (a naturally occuring brain chemical that can help to generate feelings of calmness). About an hour before bed, snack on a few crackers with cheese, whole grain toast with peanut butter, or yogurt with granola.
#3: Consider chiropractic care.
Certain spinal problems can inevitably lead to poor nights of sleep (trying to fall asleep with nagging back pain is the WORST). If back and/or joint pain is plagueing you and causing you to lose sleep at night, seeing a chiropractor may be just the answer that you are searching for. Spinal manipulations may help to realign your back, making for a much more comfortable night's rest. Stop into The Joint- their convenient walk-in hours and affordable prices make receiving the chiropractic care you need a total breeze!
