3 Great Ways to Boost Your Mental Health
There’s something about the new year that brings about a change of perspective for many people. The world seems to be full of new resolutions, promises of change, and renewed motivation. Somewhere in all of that, however, also lies a significant amount of depression. After the holiday season, depression runs abundant. The beginning of the new year is a great time to make sure that your mental health is in check and thriving.
Here are three ways to brighten your mood and maintain your mental health into the new year.
Spend time outside
Spending time outdoors has been proven to have a positive effect on mood. In fact, some of the healthiest people take at least one walk outside per week. Nature, with all of the natural light and sound, slows the heart rate, quiets the mind, and lifts spirits. If it’s possible, spend some time outside every week to boost your mental health. If it’s too cold where you live, spending time at a nursery, an indoor botanical garden, or something similar will get you through until the weather permits an outdoor adventure.
Calm your mood
A lot of depression and anxiety comes about because our minds refuse to shut down and rest regularly. They are full of stresses and worries, and getting them to be silent becomes increasingly difficult. In order to reduce anxiety, it’s important to find ways to calm the mind. Try spending time with a relaxing book or getting a massage. It also helps to listen to slow, quiet music. These techniques don’t have to be done everyday, but practicing in calming rituals on a regular basis promise to lead to more even moods and a decline in anxiety.
Meditate
Meditation is great for the mind and spirit. For some, meditation sounds terrible, but keep in mind that you don’t have to sit cross legged for hours on end to enjoy the benefits of meditation. You can actually meditate anywhere and in any position. You should also start for very short periods of time. The whole point is to get your mind to be completely silent, this allows it to rest and rejuvenate. If you have trouble getting started, look for some great instructional videos online.
Keeping your mental health in check is important for your overall health and well being. Don’t let it get lost in the shuffle during the new year. Allow it to take the front seat so that you can be the best you possible.
