5 Tips for Health in the New Year

With the new year, many people seek to get their health in check. Considering our health is so important, this goal is definitely worthwhile! It can also be very difficult. Whether we lose the time, the motivation, or simply don’t know where to start, getting fit in the new year - or really any time - can be a challenge. If you’re looking to take control of your health, here are 5 tips to get you started in the new year:

Walk more- Many of us spend very little time actually walking. You don’t have to find a treadmill or a hiking trail to log some miles. Simply walking around your block can add up to some major burned calories. Even easier, park at the back of the parking lot, or take the stairs instead of the elevator. You’ll be shocked at how quickly it adds up.

Don’t ignore the weights- Weights are essential to your health. They help you build strength and give your body the resilience you need. Don’t think that you have to lift hundreds of pounds either. Simple lightweight dumbbells can do just as much good as the heavy weights if they’re done properly.

Take a vitamin-  A lot of people get caught up in supplements, but for the most part, for most people, a simple multi-vitamin will do just fine. Find one that works for you, and take it everyday. Fair warning - don’t take vitamins on an empty stomach, as you’ll likely end up feeling sick.

Drink more water- Considering your body is mostly made up of water, taking in enough will keep you from becoming dehydrated. Water is good for keeping you full and thus making you lose weight, keeping you hydrated, and refreshing and replenishing the body. If you can, replace your other drinks (tea, soda, etc.) with water for the best overall benefits.

Take it slow- One of the biggest de-motivators is expecting too much too quickly. You’re probably not going to lose 50 pounds in a month, but if you’re realistic, you might lose four! Remember to take it slow and keep it realistic in order to stick with your goals longer.

Getting in shape and watching your health can be a difficult task. With some preparation and the right mind frame, however, it can be something that comes more naturally and therefore sticks around a lot longer. Give these tips a try in the new year to get you in the best health yet.
