Keeping Your Fitness Resolution Goals in Front of You
By Stephen R. Farris
Most everyone makes New Year's resolutions to lose weight and exercise more. We start off with good intentions, but by the time February rolls around -- sometimes later -- most of us begin to lose focus and slowly decline ourselves back into those old habits. If you're lucky enough to keep going, that's awesome.
It doesn't have to be that way though -- losing your fitness/nutrition mojo that is. Maybe you've been pushing hard and a short break is all that's needed. Maybe a little reinvention of your goals is the key, so let's take a look at a few things to help get you motivated again, or more.
January is Just One Month
The first month of the year is just one month on your goal calendar. If the results aren't coming fast enough, don't let it stop you from proceeding into the next month. You might only be suffering from putting too much pressure on yourself is all. When starting out, take it slow at first and gradually build up to the next step of your goal. Taking one step at a time will help you later in your quest as well.
Progression, Not Perfection
Losing weight and working out are progressive efforts. Perfection doesn't come overnight, it comes slowly. Set your goals along the way. Make sure you have "mastered" each of the steps. When you begin to reach the end of your goals, you'll begin to notice the results even more. But it's the small accomplishments along the way that will help keep you motivated and going.
Mentally Train
Our first thoughts are that we want to slim down, and exercise more. While that's a great first thought in getting started, we have to prepare for the long haul of our resolution(s). We have to also begin to train our brains to think about eating more healthy and the benefits exercise will have on our bodies. Once your brain establishes those thoughts more naturally, those two things will become more part of your daily routine and lifestyle.
Time
Yes, time is the dreaded word everyone hates to hear most of the time (get it -- time?) But the thing is, not everyone has the same body type, nor the exact same metabolism. That's why it is very important with any weight loss program and exercise routine, to give yourself time to start seeing results. There will be times results come quickly, then slow down, then pick up again, so don't fret.
