Chiropractic Care for All Types of Pain
By Donna Stark
Have you ever stubbed your toe or sprained your ankle? Do you remember what it felt like? More than likely, it was enough to jolt you out of your senses and leave you writhing in pain on the ground. Pain from injuries like those is sudden and intense. It can smack you so hard that you don't know which way is up, but eventually, that pain you feel will end and you can go about your business.
Unfortunately, not all pain is like that. Some pain issues take their time and as I like to say, enjoy brewing for a bit. They start at a slower pace and may only feel uncomfortable in the beginning, but that's where they get you. Because over time, you will get to the point of no return, and by then, you will wish you were only dealing with a stubbed toe.
Who's Got Time for Pain?
Some people believe that pain is pain no matter how or where it occurs, and technically, they would be correct. But there are two ways that pain is classified, and in many cases, this classification will impact how an issue is treated. Fortunately, your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic know a thing or two about these two different types and they want you to understand the differences as well! Take a look.
- Acute - Acute pain is the pain you experience with a broken bone, a toothache, or that stubbed toe. It always comes on suddenly and is caused by a specific incident, but generally doesn't last any longer than six weeks. Once it is over, you can say goodbye, wish it well, and get back to your normal life.
- Chronic pain - Chronic pain, on the other hand, is the pain that really likes to overstay its welcome. It's the pain that goes on and on and on, the pain that prefers to stay and torment. In fact, it will often choose to stay with you for months and could even move into your life for years as well. It can occur without an obvious incident and in many cases, seems to enjoy its slow development over time. On top of that, chronic pain always likes to travel with its family members, so you need to make room for some of its cousins, such as muscle tension, immobility, fatigue, depression, mood swings, and loss of independence.
