Form Healthy Habits This Summer
By Rachel Carver
Summer gives us warm weather and more daylight. For various reasons, people focus on nutrition and fitness goals during the summer months.
However, you don't have to always come up with a totally new plan to improve your health. Small changes can make a big difference.
Incorporate these healthy habits into your life this summer.
Prioritize Your Sleep
Quality sleep is an important part of overall health. Most of the body's restorative functions take place during sleep. Studies also show a higher BMI corresponds with less than eight hours of sleep each night. Poor sleep can cause you to choose foods high in refined carbs and added sugar. Consuming two kiwi before bed can improve your sleep, while having a large meal can disrupt your sleep.
Walk More
Walking can speed up your metabolism and relieve stress. Summer weather makes it easy to accomplish your step goal.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during phone calls, or enjoy a 10-minute walk before you start your day. Increasing your movement through walking can combat too much sitting, which negatively impacts our health.
Switch It Up
Barbeques and summer gatherings make it hard to practice healthy eating. If you love burgers, use a lettuce wrap instead of a bun. Trade your favorite sweet drink for a club soda infused with cucumber and a squeeze of lime. When you choose healthier options, you can take other opportunities to enjoy ice cream or your favorite chip without guilt.
Cook
Restaurant meals are convenient. However, the extra calories from multiple takeout meals can make it hard to follow your nutrition goals.
Increase your cooking this summer by taking advantage of farmers markets and fresh produce at the grocery store. Swapping one restaurant meal for a homemade one gives you extra minerals, fiber, and vitamins. It also reduces the excess oil, added sugar, and salt often found in takeout meals.
Grill Veggies
Summer is the perfect time to try some fresh vegetables on the grill. They taste great and give you a nutrition boost. Invest in a grilling basket, or simply wrap them in foil after covering them with oil and your favorite seasoning.
