Maple Syrup - The Sweet Superfood

By Krista Elliott

On a lazy Sunday morning, there's nothing like sitting down to a stack of pancakes with your morning coffee. And what is better on pancakes than real maple syrup? It's sweet and delicious, but did you know that this essential pancake topper is surprisingly healthy?

Keep in mind that not all syrups are created equal. Commercial table syrup is typically made of high-fructose corn syrup, caramel color, and a long list of artificial ingredients. Pure maple syrup is simply sap from the sugar maple tree that has been boiled long enough to concentrate its sugars, and has no other ingredients. When looking at the label, be sure to look for the phrase "100% Pure Maple Syrup" in order to be sure you're not just getting table syrup with maple flavoring thrown in. Or read the ingredients label; there should be nothing there but maple syrup.

What's So Great About Pure Maple Syrup?

First of all, it just tastes better. Pure maple syrup has a complex, slightly smoky taste that complements a wide range of foods, from waffles to fish to cheese.

However, maple syrup has also been found to contain an impressive number of antioxidants. According to studies by Navindra Seeram, a professor at the University of Rhode Island, about 20 antioxidants can be found in maple syrup. Some of these compounds are flavonoids, phenolic acids, and stilbenes, all of which have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-free-radical effects. Previous studies have found calcium, Vitamin B, zinc, potassium and magnesium in maple syrup.

Did You Know?

A lot of "maple flavored" food items are not flavored with actual maple syrup. Instead, they are flavored with the seeds of the fenugreek plant. Fenugreek seeds have a scent and taste that is similar to maple, and they are commonly used in Indian cooking.

How to Incorporate Maple Syrup Into Your Diet?

Keep in mind that maple syrup is a sugar, and as such, is not something that you want to start consuming with abandon. However, if a sweetener is needed for your food, maple syrup (or honey) are healthier and more flavorful choices than refined sugar or corn syrup. A small amount on your oatmeal, brushed onto salmon or chicken, or mixed into a marinade can provide a complex and delightful sweetness.

If you're lucky enough to have access to different grades of maple syrup, it's worth trying them to see which you like best. Maple syrup grades can range from light and almost clear to a dark molasses color with a strong taste. The nutritional benefits are similar across all grades, however, so the kind that you choose can be left solely to your own personal preference.

So now when you dig into your Sunday pancakes, pour on a little of that healthy sweetness, and enjoy the benefits!
