The Worst Health Mistakes Made in Restaurants

By Sara Butler

Eating healthy at home is easy -- but eating out is a health minefield. Restaurants cannot be avoided because they’re social places you meet up with friends and family to celebrate or just spend time together. That’s perfectly OK! The key to staying healthy at restaurants is to identify the types of things that can set your health and wellness goals back. Here are a few of the most common restaurant mistakes and how you can avoid them.

Skipping Other Meals

If you’re trying to count calories or watch what you eat, you may be tempted to splurge at a restaurant by avoiding other meals throughout the day. This isn’t a great strategy. What you eat over the course of an entire day contributes to your nutrition, so skipping out on other meals is a plan that can ultimately be harmful to your health.

When you know you’ll be eating out, make sure to map out your meals for the day in your mind. If you have to, write down your plan. It may also be a good idea to check out the restaurant’s menu ahead of time to plan out what you’ll order. That way you can plan the rest of your day accordingly and enjoy your meal out.

Don’t Arrive Hungry

If you skip meals in anticipation of going hog wild at a restaurant, then you’ll end up overeating. Not eating regularly makes you hungry and then can thwart your self-control once you’re faced with all the high-calorie, high-sodium, and high-fat choices on a restaurant’s menu.

The best way to deal with this is simply not to show up hungry. Healthy snacks are important throughout the day, so pack some nuts or a piece of fruit to eat before you arrive at the restaurant to help you from having eyes bigger than your calorie allowance for the day. Also, make sure to stay on top of your water intake.

Don’t Ignore How It’s Cooked

How food is prepared in a restaurant will help you know if it’s a healthy choice or not. Frying is a popular cooking method because it’s cheap, easy, and fast -- but it’s terrible for your overall health and it destroys nutrients in the food along the way.

Your best bet is to go with something grilled or baked on the menu. You also can’t go wrong with something sautéed, roasted, grilled, or steamed. Look for those buzzwords and you’ll be on your way to a healthier choice.

Eating out isn't something you can avoid all the time, so know what strategies you can put into action to help you come away from your meal no worse for the wear and with your health and wellness goals intact.
