Everyone Needs Protein

By Donna Stark

When I hear people talking about adding protein to their diets it's usually at the gym, or if it's at a different location, the discussion is usually between those who go to the gym. Religiously. But protein isn't only reserved for athletes, bodybuilders, and the die-hard weekend warrior. In fact, we all need protein, no matter what our fitness levels are. If you're trying to lose some weight, feel more energized, or stay satisfied throughout the day, protein will get you there. And if you can't stomach the idea of eating chicken or drinking protein powder 24/7, don't worry! There are plenty of delicious options that you can choose from!

Start Your Day With Protein

It's important to find ways to incorporate protein into your diet because, guess what? Your body doesn't store it, and if it doesn't get enough, nearly every bodily system will suffer. Do you want nice nails and hair? Lean muscles? A healthy weight? Do you want your body to maintain the ability to build and repair tissue? You need protein! And a great way to get it is with breakfast. Here are some tips on how to start your busy day with a punch of protein.

  • Overnight oats - If you haven't tried overnight oats, I would encourage you to do so! Made with Greek yogurt, they are the perfect option for those busy mornings when time is scarce.
  • Smoothies - Adding Greek yogurt or cottage cheese (yes, cottage cheese!) to your morning smoothie is a great way to increase your intake of protein in the morning. Never made a smoothie with cottage cheese before? Well, if you like the flavor of cheesecake, you will like this!
  • Oatmeal - Making oatmeal with milk and then topping it with a dollop of nut butter or even a handful of nuts can increase your protein by quite a lot. You can even whisk a beaten egg into your cooked oatmeal for more! But don't worry, the egg will cook slowly. It's not like adding scrambled eggs to your bowl of oats.
  • Hemp seeds - Just a couple tablespoons of hemp seeds can provide that punch of protein you are looking for, so sprinkle them onto your cereal, oatmeal, or avocado toast in the morning. You can also blend them into your smoothie!
  • Egg whites - Egg whites are packed with protein and can basically be added to anything, but the most flavorful way to eat them is to make an egg-white omelet. This is where you can add that chicken or maybe even some beans if you are feeling adventurous!

Building That Strong Body

It isn't too difficult to find ways to add protein to your diet, and thank goodness for that! Because nobody likes boring meals but more importantly, nobody likes a weak body. So eat your breakfast and keep your body strong with that punch of protein!
