An Apple a Day Is Good for You!
By Donna Stark
They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but that doesn't mean you should only stop at one. Apples can make great additions to every meal and are the perfect snack to grab and go! This delicious fruit is full of fiber and packed with nutrients, and because they are extremely versatile, it couldn't be any easier to incorporate more of them into your diet! So what are you waiting for? Head to your local store and pick up a pound or two. You have a lot of cooking to do!
Apples Throughout Your Day
Whether you enjoy them on their own or love to bake them into a pie, apples are one of the most flavorful fruits to enjoy. And with so many varieties to choose from, it couldn't be any easier to tap into your creativity while cooking! Take a look at the following suggestions on how you can incorporate apples into every meal of the day.
- Breakfast - OK, admittedly, some of these ideas may sound like dessert, but you only live once, right? So, go ahead and start your days by sprinkling them on top of your oatmeal and yogurt, by baking them into muffins and cinnamon rolls, by cooking some into the most delicious applesauce and apple butter you have ever tasted, or by flipping them ever-so-gently in your pancakes.
- Lunch - Getting that boost of energy in the middle of the day is important and apples are the perfect ingredient to do that! Enjoy your apples during lunch by tossing them into your greens, adding them into your homemade chicken salad, or including them into your favorite smoothie. Don't forget that you can eat them raw with a side of peanut butter too!
- Dinner - Most dinners consist of savory ingredients but it is still always nice to have a touch of sweetness as well. Apples can be added to the last meal of the day quite easily. They roast beautifully with your favorite root vegetables, they can make a great addition to your quinoa salad, and if you are really feeling adventurous, they can be added into certain soups.
Benefits to Your Health
It isn't too much of a stretch to believe that eating an apple (or more) a day will help keep the doctor away because there are so many health benefits that come along with doing so! Apples are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, but that isn't all! They are also packed with plenty of antioxidants. You can't really go wrong with having an apple in your hand, so go ahead and get munching!
