Healthy Habits for Mom and Baby
By Donna Stark
Do this, but don't do that. Eat this, but don't even think of eating that. Living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can definitely be confusing for so many people but not nearly as much as it is for women who are pregnant. Expectant mothers receive advice from others nearly every time they step out the door -- whether it is wanted or not -- and that can lead to a lot of confusion and doubt. Fortunately, it isn't too hard to create a healthy lifestyle for both mom and baby. Here are some simple suggestions to look over and follow in the exciting months ahead.
Watch Your Diet
Giving in to the occasional craving or indulgence is certainly OK to do ... after all, you deserve it ... but you will want to make sure that doing so doesn't turn into a daily habit! Be sure to avoid processed, caffeinated, and sugary foods, and stick with healthy snack and meal options instead. Fill at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, and fill the other half with lean proteins and whole grains. Remember, you should be eating with your baby's health in mind as well as your own!
Exercise Within Limits
Unless you are told otherwise by your doctor, you should aim for as much physical activity as you can get. Just be sure to choose exercises that complement each stage of your pregnancy for the most comfort. Try low-impact workouts such as walking, swimming, and cycling, and incorporate as much daily stretching into your routine as you can. It's also important to take frequent breaks during your fitness routine and to drink plenty of water, especially if outside in the heat.
Prioritize Rest
It may sound simple and for some it is, but getting the rest your body needs can be downright difficult when you are at your most uncomfortable. It is vital that you prioritize your sleep, and if you aren't getting it at night you need to figure out why. Should you try new sleeping positions? Do you need to redesign your room for optimal rest? Do you need a new mattress? Does pain keep you awake? You may need to seek help from your doctor or local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic to figure out a way to get better sleep, but once you do, you can expect smoother days ahead!
Optimal Health for Mom and Baby
Taking care of yourself has never been more important than now. Your baby is relying on your actions and behaviors for its own health and wellness so be sure to make the right decisions in that regard. And if you have any questions, ask your doctor right away! Peace of mind is worth all its weight in gold!
