Winter Fun for Everyone
By Donna Stark
As we settle into winter, many of our families have begun planning, or have already planned, vacations and holiday plans. Some of these plans involve outdoor physical activities, such as skiing, ice skating, and snowboarding. But as much fun as these activities can be, they may not be for everyone. If you are looking for some quality family time that is fun and safe for everyone involved, take a look at the following ideas. From the very young to the very old, these activities are sure to bring everyone together.
Game Night
Forget the layers and layers of clothes and the inherent risk that comes from barreling down a mountain. Get everyone together for a cozy, but competitive, night inside! Board games can serve as a great source of fun, while still bringing some friendly competition to the house. Encourage everyone to bring their favorite game or try some new ones. Just be sure to have plenty of hot chocolate and cookies to share!
Bonfire With Treats
Who doesn't love sitting around a fire with a cup of hot cocoa? Set up the chairs, pull out some blankets, and invite your loved ones over to enjoy a s'more or two. You can count on a bunch of smiles and laughs as the stories of everyday life make their rounds. You may even be able to sneak some holiday carols in as well! Your elderly loved ones will surely enjoy this activity but please be sure to follow your local fire laws.
Bake-Off
The holiday season would not be the same without all the different kinds of treats begging to be eaten. The baking process can serve as a great way for your family to come together and enjoy each other's company while making a delicious variety of cookies, cakes, gingerbread, and brownies. To spice this time up even more, turn it into a competition! Challenge everyone to make their favorite holiday treat, and then decide who gets the crown.
Movie Night
Movie night is always a family favorite. If you want to make it a weekly tradition and keep it exciting, try incorporating the following suggestions.
- Switch who gets to pick the movie each time
- Choose a different theme or genre each week
- Have a potluck before the movie
- Buy popcorn from your local theater so it feels more authentic
Regardless of the approach you take with your family's movie night, it is guaranteed to pack in loads of fun. Throw in some popcorn, blankets, and sweet treats, and your family is sure to enjoy each other's company.
Winter Fun for Everyone
It doesn't matter where you live or what holiday you celebrate, make sure to plan activities that everyone can be involved with. It really will make a difference in the hearts of those who would rather not, or can't, hit the slopes.
