How to Stay Healthy During the Winter

By Donna Stark

As you sit on the couch, bundled up in blankets and grumbling about the cold weather and the likelihood of you getting sick this winter, try to remember there are plenty of things you can do to stay healthy. You just have to get off that couch and change your mindset! Instead of using your time to think the worst is going to happen, use it to prepare your body for what lies ahead. Listed below are some incredible tips from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic that will help keep you out of the doctor's office this winter season.

Nutrient-Dense Diet

Just because you aren't filling up on cold cereals in the morning or snacking on potato chips during the day, that doesn't mean your diet is as healthy as it can be! It's important to consume a well-balanced, nutrient-dense diet every day of the week. Your diet should include whole grains, lean meats, fatty fish, fruits, vegetables, and heart-healthy fats. You can even throw in some nuts and seeds if you'd like too! But if you are really worried about getting sick, don't forget to include foods rich in Vitamin C!

Daily Exercise

Let's stop using the weather as an excuse to skip your daily exercise. You have to include movement in your daily routine if you want to make it through the season, so throw those blankets to the side and get your body moving! Find some online workout or yoga videos to follow inside when the weather is bad and when it's not, bundle up and head outdoors for a brisk jog or walk.

Adequate Hydration

Yes, it's OK if you want to stick with hot beverages during the next few months but don't forget to drink plenty of water as well! Water helps to remove toxins from your body and carries nutrients to where they need to be, but that's not all. It's also important to remember that dehydration can still occur when the sun isn't out and the temperatures are in the teens, so make sure you are keeping plenty of water by your side.

Good Hygiene

Above all, make sure you and those around you are practicing good hygiene! Clean and disinfect your home, car, and workspace regularly. Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, but especially before handling and eating food, and after you use a tissue. The best thing you can do to stop the spread of germs, though, is to make sure everyone stays home if they aren't feeling well.

A Healthy Season

Stop grumbling and do something about your overall health and wellness this season. Try to incorporate the suggestions above into your daily routine, and head on in to see your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic for more!
